What to expect

A dentist first checks that your teeth and gums are healthy. Treatment may use custom trays at home, an in-practice system, or a combination, with instructions to limit sensitivity and protect the gums.

Only registered dental professionals can legally provide tooth whitening in the UK.

Whitening changes natural tooth colour but does not lighten fillings, crowns or veneers.

Temporary tooth sensitivity is a common side effect.

Is teeth whitening available on the NHS?

Teeth whitening is cosmetic and is not normally available through the NHS.

Before agreeing to treatment

Ask which parts are NHS and which are private, what alternatives are available, and what you will pay. Your dentist should explain material risks and the expected aftercare.
