Tooth-coloured composite resin shaped and bonded to a tooth to repair or alter its appearance.

What to expect

The dentist assesses the tooth and bite, prepares the surface, applies and shapes composite resin, hardens it with a curing light and polishes the result.

Bonding usually removes less tooth tissue than a porcelain veneer.

Composite can stain, chip or wear and may need repair.

It may be used for small chips, gaps or changes in tooth shape.

Is dental bonding available on the NHS?

Composite repairs may be available when clinically necessary. Bonding carried out only to change appearance is private.

Before agreeing to treatment

Ask which parts are NHS and which are private, what alternatives are available, and what you will pay. Your dentist should explain material risks and the expected aftercare.
