Fillings

A filling repairs a hole in a tooth after decay or damage has been removed.

What to expect

The dentist removes the damaged tooth tissue, prepares the cavity and places a filling material. Local anaesthetic may be used depending on the tooth and depth of treatment.

Common materials include amalgam and tooth-coloured fillings.

The material offered depends on clinical need and the position of the tooth.

A filling does not stop new decay, so cleaning and diet still matter.

Is fillings available on the NHS?

Fillings that are clinically necessary are available through NHS dentistry. In England they are normally covered by Band 2; the material used is based on clinical need.

Before agreeing to treatment

Ask which parts are NHS and which are private, what alternatives are available, and what you will pay. Your dentist should explain material risks and the expected aftercare.
