Crowns
A crown is a cap fitted over a damaged or weakened tooth to restore its shape and function.
What to expect
The tooth is prepared and an impression or digital scan is taken. A laboratory-made crown may require a temporary crown while the final restoration is produced.
Crowns can be made from metal, porcelain, ceramic or combinations of materials.
A crown may be recommended after root canal treatment.
Laboratory-made crowns usually require more than one visit.
Is crowns available on the NHS?
Crowns are available on the NHS when clinically necessary. In England they are normally covered by Band 3; purely cosmetic choices are private.
Before agreeing to treatment
Ask which parts are NHS and which are private, what alternatives are available, and what you will pay. Your dentist should explain material risks and the expected aftercare.
