Bridges

A fixed replacement for one or more missing teeth, supported by nearby teeth or implants.

What to expect

The dentist assesses the gap and supporting teeth, discusses alternatives and prepares the support if appropriate. An impression or scan is used to make the bridge before it is fitted and checked.

Unlike a denture, a conventional bridge is fixed in place.

Cleaning beneath and around a bridge is important.

Not every gap has suitable supporting teeth, so an assessment is essential.

Is bridges available on the NHS?

Bridges can be provided on the NHS when clinically necessary. In England they are normally covered by Band 3.

Before agreeing to treatment

Ask which parts are NHS and which are private, what alternatives are available, and what you will pay. Your dentist should explain material risks and the expected aftercare.
