Dental Check-up

An examination used to assess your teeth, gums and mouth and agree when you should be seen again.

What to expect

The dentist may ask about pain, medicines, smoking and alcohol, examine your mouth, and discuss prevention or treatment. X-rays are taken only when clinically needed.

NICE recommends a maximum recall interval of 24 months for adults.

For patients under 18, the recommended maximum interval is 12 months.

Your own interval can be shorter because it is based on oral-health risk.

Is dental check-up available on the NHS?

Clinically necessary examinations, diagnosis, advice and relevant X-rays are included in NHS care. In England these normally fall within Band 1.

Before agreeing to treatment

Ask which parts are NHS and which are private, what alternatives are available, and what you will pay. Your dentist should explain material risks and the expected aftercare.
