What to expect

An orthodontic assessment considers the teeth, jaws and bite. Fixed or removable appliances are adjusted over time, followed by retainers to help hold the result.

NHS orthodontic treatment is normally available to eligible patients under 18 with a clear clinical need.

Treatment commonly takes between 6 and 30 months.

Retainers are needed after active treatment to reduce tooth movement.

Is braces and orthodontics available on the NHS?

NHS orthodontics is based on age and clinical need, not appearance alone. Adult NHS treatment is available only in limited circumstances.

Before agreeing to treatment

Ask which parts are NHS and which are private, what alternatives are available, and what you will pay. Your dentist should explain material risks and the expected aftercare.
