Wisdom Tooth Removal

Removal of a wisdom tooth when it is causing repeated or significant clinical problems.

What to expect

The dentist or surgeon reviews symptoms and X-rays, uses local anaesthetic and may divide the tooth or make a small gum incision. Stitches may be used and aftercare instructions are provided.

Wisdom teeth that are healthy and not causing problems are usually monitored rather than removed.

Pain and swelling commonly improve after 1 or 2 days but can last up to 2 weeks.

Complex cases may be referred to a specialist or hospital service.

Is wisdom tooth removal available on the NHS?

Removal is available on the NHS when clinically necessary. Routine removal of symptom-free wisdom teeth is not recommended.

Before agreeing to treatment

Ask which parts are NHS and which are private, what alternatives are available, and what you will pay. Your dentist should explain material risks and the expected aftercare.
